The Monterey Bay Area Chapter of the American Red Cross offers several valuable services to the community including a knitting group, a medical equipment loan closet and Files of Life.

Knitting Group

Following a centuries-old tradition that was formalized by the American Red Cross in 1916 the Monterey Bay Area Chapter of the American Red Cross boasts one of the few remaining knitting groups in the country. No longer do volunteers make sweaters and caps for soldiers in the trenches—they knit sweaters, caps, scarves, baby blankets and socks for local needy families. Using some historical regulation patterns, a group of more than twenty volunteer ladies meet on a monthly basis to exchange ideas and deliver completed projects.

Last year, the Carmel Area Red Cross knitters’ group donated over 200 items to the Angel Project, a group organized in Carmel Valley to assist families in need. Working through the schools, the Angel Project identifies these families, sends invitations to “shop for Christmas” and establishes a “store” offering clothing, food, fresh produce, toys for children, games, gift wrapping and even “gift items” for adults. All of these items are donated.

Volunteer knitters meet once a month to exchange ideas and to deliver their completed projects. New members to the knitting group are welcome and donations of washable yarn are gratefully accepted at the Red Cross Chapter House in Carmel: 8th Avenue at Dolores Street, 831-624-6921.

Project Yellow Ribbon

This year, the Knitters group is working on creating caps for soldiers abroad. Click here to download a pattern for these caps. There are a few factors to keep in mind when making these caps. They should be:

Adult sizes (18-22 inch circumference)
Machine washable and dryable acrylic
Dark or neutral colors
Plain beanie or watch-cap styles are best (no pom-poms, etc)

Please drop completed caps off at the American Red Cross, Monterey Bay Area Chapter House in Carmel through September of this year.

Medical Equipment Loan Closet

Whether you're just visiting Carmel and need a wheelchair or live in the Valley and need a cane, the Monterey Bay Area Chapter of the American Red Cross may be able to help.

The Carmel Office offers a free medical equipment loan closet to anyone living or residing within the Monterey County.

The closet is stocked with walkers, canes, wheelchairs, transfer benches and shower benches of various designs and heights.

Equipment is loaned free of charge for periods of up to three months and may be renewed by calling the Monterey Bay Area Chapter.

Please stop by or call us at 831-624-6921 to see if we have a piece of medical equipment that could meet your need.
