All Red Cross chapters rely primarily on volunteers to provide community services. Below are listed some of the volunteer jobs at the Monterey Bay Red Cross.
DISASTER SERVICES
Disaster Committee: Develop and participate in planning and/or programs that help the community mitigate, respond to and recover from disasters that can or do affect the community.
Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR): Disaster operations are administered with a variety of services, Direct Services, Internal Support Services, External Support Services and Administration. You can become part of a Relief Operation outside your chapter response area by receiving training in one or more of the services and have your application submitted to the National Red Cross by your local chapter to become a member of the DSHR.
Disaster Action Team (DAT): Trained members respond to disaster on an on-call basis. They provide food, clothing, shelter, medical assistance and other services to those affected by disaster.
Community Disaster Education (CDE): Assist local paid and volunteer staff. Develop and/or deliver disaster education material helpful to the surrounding community.
Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES): Volunteers assist military families by communicating, verifying, and documenting essential messages: birth, death, illness, and health & welfare from family members to their service man or woman.
INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL SERVICES
Volunteers promote International Humanitarian Law education programs in schools and for the public; education and fundraising for the Global Measles Initiative and contributions to other international Red Cross relief efforts; community based international goodwill and disaster relief projects; collaboration with other international relief efforts in the community. In addition, volunteers promote the Seven Principles of International Red Cross.
HEALTH AND SAFETY SERVICES
The Monterey Bay Area Chapter provides health and safety services for the benefit of the community. Volunteers, age 17 and older, receive training and donate time as an INSTRUCTOR in one of the following areas:
- First Aid and CPR
- Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
- Water Safety
- Lifeguarding
- Baby-sitting
- Basic Aid Training (BAT) - first aid for youth ages 8 - 12
- Pet First Aid
BLOOD DRIVES
Prior to Blood Mobile Donor Recruitment: Call regular donors to schedule appointments. Volunteers also prepare mailings for blood mobiles.
Canteen Preparation: Prepare food and refreshments for the canteen.
At the Blood Mobile Registration: Greet and assist donors with registration forms.
Donor Room Aide: Escort donors to collection area and to canteen.
Canteen: Serve refreshments to donors.
Recognition: Thank donors and present stickers and gallon level pins.
OTHER OPPORTUNITIES
Front Desk: Volunteers support activities and programs by handling phone calls, acting as a receptionist, selling Red Cross materials from office, and helping the staff with records, mailings and computer entry. Front Desk volunteers also help residents of our area to borrow medical equipment from the Chapter Loan Closet.
Knitters: Volunteers who like to knit are supplied with yarn for knitting items such as lap robes, slippers, caps, and sweaters that are donated to those in need.
General Office Work: Volunteers are always needed for general work around the office and for anyone with computer skills or someone willing to learn computer skills.

How do I become a volunteer?
New volunteers are required to complete the National Red Cross online orientation (Modules 1 to 4):

Upon completion, please be sure to print out the last page of Module 4 to show that you have completed the session and fill out an application form:
Then, call the Monterey Bay Area Chapter at (831) 624-6921 or email to ARCMontereyBay@ARCMontereyBay.org to register for a brief Chapter Orientation. During the Chapter Orientation, new volunteers will receive a Monterey Bay Area Chapter volunteer handbook and will receive information about matching your interests, skills, and hours of availability with volunteer opportunities at the chapter.
